    The Prerunner 2.65 Shocks were born of a collaboration project between Bilstein and an entrepreneurial company that's on the rise out of the EU (Spain), "4x4 proyect". Yes, spelled with a "y"!

    Bilstein: a household name in quality high-performance shocks.

    4x4 proyect: a small business that started in a garage around 2005, then moved to a bigger site but with the same small and specialized mindset. This has allowed them to work on small volume specialty solutions for enthusiasts looking for that extra something in quality and function. 4x4 proyect is a Bilstein Offroad Expert Center and long-time off road suspension specialist. They are fully dedicated to suspension R+D and cater to the off road community to cover all suspension-related necessities... anything from commercial and fleet solutions to custom applications.

    A FEW WORDS FROM 4X4 PROYECT

    "Our Prerunner shocks project started after years of experience with different shock manufacturers.

    We designed the shock from scratch to be able to offer a direct fit solution and to correct/improve all the points we were not happy with from other products. I'll try to highlight the differences and important characteristics.

    Shock size: Several other aftermarket G-Class shocks offer a 2.0 shock absorber. We offer a 2.65" diameter shock with a massive 60mm working piston. This means we almost triple the oil and nitrogen capacity of the shock making it much more stable under heavy abuse. A bigger external reservoir (again about 3 times the volume) generates less back pressure on the compression stroke resulting in more precise and comfortable handling.

    Shock travel: Appropriate for applications from 0-2.5" lift, we offfer 10" of travel. By comparison, FOX gets you just 8.5" of travel at the same ride height.

    Comfort: BILSTEIN has a long tradition in shock piston design. We worked with Bilstein's shock engineers to develop a specific valving to go with their digressive pistons that results in great stability and control but maintains comfort for daily driving unlike many competitors that use linear piston technology.

    Self-adjustability: By combining the main working piston with the ACV valve (which is a fixed piston) we combine the characteristics of 2 different pistons. This means that the shock adapts to the stroke frequency and length by sensing the oil volume being displaced delivering a smooth ride under normal conditions but offering great bottom-out resistance under extreme compression. With this we were also able to tune the shock as a perfect all-rounder as opposed to FOX and others. For our liking, FOX is a great shock for baja style driving (straight ahead) and Öhlins for WRC style driving (quick cornering). We have worked on combining these characteristics.

    Robustness: Everything on our Prerunner shocks is made to last. The shock bodies are all 3mm wall steel. The cap ends are billet machined to accept a size 12 FK-brand bearing (All others use size 10 or smaller bearings). Using bigger bearings guarantees they will be able to handle heavy off road abuse without rattling or loosening.

    Robustness part 2: We use Bilstein's 22mm racing shafts (FOX 15,875mm). They're ultra thick hard chromed and induction hardened for a hardness of 63hrc rockwell as compared to the usual 43hrc rockwell. This means that sand-blasting and stone-chipping will be no concern let alone bending it.

    Free flow: we use ports and reservoir tubes with a 10mm inner diameter as opposed to FOX 4-7mm to allow for a smooth and free oil flow on hard impacts.

    External 3-stage bump stop: going back to their racing pedigree our shocks include an external 3-stage bump stop. This bump stop will come into play under extreme compression when reaching the end of the stroke to dissipate impact energy progressively and help preventing harsh bottom outs.

    Valvings: While others offer only one valving setup we have 3 developed and ready to be mounted off the shelf.
    - Soft: very comfortable. Ideal for Gs with no extra weight that are mostly used for road driving and light off road.
    - Medium: a very nice all-rounder. Perfect for a G that will have some extra weight and needs more stability on- and off-road.
    - Hard: For fully built expedition/overlanding Gs like that of G-Wagen community influencer Benyamin Senkal's heavily overloaded G500 (recently featured on the cover of Overland Journal). The hard valving setup was designed to handle high loads (1000lbs+) and deliver stability on vehicles with heavy roof racks."

    PRODUCT DETAILS

    This shock kit fits all solid axled Mercedes Benz G-Wagens, 2 and 4 doors with diesel and petrol engine and includes 4 Bilstein 2.65" Prerunner shocks equipped with racing technology and exclusively developed by 4x4 proyect design. It is designed for lift heights from 0"-2.5". The shocks come standard with self-adjusting digressive valving that adapts to any terrain while maintaining full control and stability. All necessary mounting hardware is included making this kit easy to install with common tools.

    Some of the Bilstein 2.65" Prerunner shocks features are:

    Oversized bearings: Many of our customers have complained about their shock's bearings not being up to the task of handling the forces they put them through. To solve this problem once and for all we have designed our Prerunner shocks to accept a size 12 bearing, the biggest in its class, supporting up to 78,000 lbs of load and increasing its service life up to 150% when compared to the competition. As if that wasn't enough we only use premium quality bearings from the best manufacturer on the market, FK Rod Ends. For extreme or salty environments optional stainless steel bearings are available. All our FK bearings include PTFE liners so they will handle the hardest tasks without squeaking or rattling.

    ACV Valves: We take the Anti Cavitation Valves from Bilstein's 9200 racing series. This revolutionary and exclusive fixed piston sits on top of the external reservoir acting as a accelerometer/decelerometer. The ACV is designed to exponentially increase the internal pressure on the shock oil as the velocity of the shaft stroke increases. By virtually eliminating the possibility of shock fade due to cavitation, the shock is able to withstand extreme working conditions, even racing environments, while maintaining full comfort on any terrain. Last but not least the ACV valve delivers excellent bottom out protection on rough grounds and hard impacts.

    Ultra hard piston rod: The choice of the massive 22mm piston rods for our Prerunner shocks was based on multiple tests, many of them destructive. The final result is a rod with a hard chrome surface with up to 3 tenths depth covering a heavy duty induction hardening treatment of up to 3mm. This gives the rod a hardness of 61 to 63 on the Rockwell scale. That is much more than any piston rod will ever need, but its better to be safe than sorry. As a matter of fact these same rods are used on Bilstein's 9300 racing series bypass shocks that are so respected in many race series such as the Baja.

    High Capacity External Reservoir: Common belief is that big external reservoirs are used only to fit more oil and thus cool better. While this is approach is not entirely wrong the most important task of a big reservoir is to increase the nitrogen capacity. Reason being is that as the rod enters the shock on a compression stroke it displaces a volume of oil equivalent to the portion of rod entering the shock. As oil is incompressible it is the nitrogen that has to accommodate for this change by compressing. Therefore, the larger the nitrogen volume the lesser counter-pressure it will generate on compression thus making the shock absorber smoother and more stable. Since, according to thermodynamics, large pressure changes result in big temperature changes, reducing those pressure changes will reduce the shock's working temperature and increase its resistance to fading. Therefore the best solution to increasing a shocks's performance is to fit a high capacity reservoir with an extra-large nitrogen chamber.

    Redundant Nitrogen Fill Port Safety Cap: To protect the fill port, Bilstein and 4x4 proyect fit an additional sealed billet aluminium safety cap over it. This redundant cap keeps nitrogen in the shock even in the event of a failure of the primary Schrader valve. On top of that, the machined thread on cap provides excellent protection against flying stones and debris for the Schrader valve itself.
